| February 23, 2009 - You wouldn’t ordinarily think that a soft-spoken Yale/Berkeley educated corporate/tax partner would be yearning for adventure and its attendant risk, but then you would be mistaken. Richard Kim fills his personal time seeking adventures on the hiking trails of mountaintop peaks. He has scaled the likes of Mt. Whitney cresting at nearly 15,000 feet above sea level in his favorite Sierra Nevadas, and regularly practices his mountaineering skills traversing the backcountry of the local Santa Monica Mountains. With a big smile, he claims hiking through the local mountains is simply “a kick” because they are close, accessible, nearly in his backyard, but a complete change of scenery from the downtown skyline and the trappings of a successful corporate practice complete with computers, papers, and the tax code. He hopes his next big adventure will take him up the steep slopes to the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro. | ||

Finding business solutions for his clients while being their legal protector against unacceptable risk is what Richard enjoys doing most when he isn’t on the trail. The combination of legal expertise and business acumen that Richard brings to every transaction is the natural result of his business administration degree from Berkeley, his Yale law degree and his early work experience at Price Waterhouse. Today at Lim Ruger, he focuses on mergers and acquisitions, formation of limited liability companies, private equity, venture capital and other financing mechanisms. Such a practice can be very technical in nature, some might even declare it dull, but Richard’s sense of adventure and his business know-how results in engaging clients to find the right business solution that will lead to success without unnecessary legal risk. | |

It is important, he says, “to strike a balance between the ultimate in legal protections and high risk/high reward business decisions.” Whereas legal structures can sometimes be limiting, he appreciates the limitless rewards of sound business decisions. Richard is animated as he speaks of how risks and rewards must be weighed and balanced to achieve success. He relishes the opportunity to do more than just counseling clients about their legal options. Richard approaches his legal practice with the same philosophy as he does his passion for hiking. “Hope for the best and prepare for the worst,” he says, “and make sure you add practicality to the mix.” That means structuring each business transaction with caution but in workable ways. He maintains it is no different than preparing for an unpredictable climb with lightweight equipment to conserve enough energy to reach the summit. Maybe the next time you catch him on his cell phone, he’ll be at the summit of Kilimanjaro---and yes, there may be mobile phone coverage there and Richard always has his mobile phone with him in case a client calls. |
